Margot James explains measures introduced to reduce nuisance calls
Britons were bombarded with 3.9 billion nuisance phone calls and text messages last year — the equivalent of 7,420 every minute, according to watchdog Ofcom. The Government has pledged to introduce a law by the end of the month that will ban cold calls about pensions. This means that firms will no longer be permitted to ring people at home out of the blue.

Have you got problems with your neighbour? Need some advice on what you can do if you have nightmare neighbours who are really noisy and troublesome?
In this video, we share Phil Spencer's advice on the steps you need to follow to resolve disputes with your neighbours or how to make a complaint about your neighbour.
➤WHEN DO YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT A NEIGHBOUR?
If a neighbour's security light shines directly into your house, this is a type of statutory nuisance, as is lighting bonfires in non-permitted locations or at inconsiderate times during the day.
Having your privacy invaded by security cameras is another cause for concern. Any neighbouring dogs barking into the early hours or using your garden could also be seen as good grounds for complaints.
➤WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOUR NEIGHBOUR HAS BECOME A NUISANCE?
The first step is to always try and talk to them, don't be confrontational or argumentative. Calmly explain how the problem is affecting you and try to offer a solution.
If this doesn't work and you want to take things further, keep a record of the problems noting when and where the incidences occurred and for how long.
➤STILL HAVING PROBLEMS WITH YOUR NEIGHBOUR?
If the problem still hasn't been resolved by this point, you could consider using mediation. This is a service that provides an impartial mediator who can deal with your problem without bias. There are costs involved, but it's less expensive than taking legal action. Your local council or housing association should be able to refer you to a mediation provider.
Legal action should always be a last resort as it can be a time consuming and costly process, although you can seek free legal advice from an advice centre.

Hush Acoustics’ range of sound insulation systems provide effective noise reduction solutions for all the most widely used approaches to constructing concrete or masonry separating floors.
We offer 9 x fully tested systems for architects and contractors to apply the solution that best fits their project requirements and easily meet the acoustic performance standards they seek for concrete slab, beam and block and screeded floors.
All systems are fully compliant with the Building Regulations covering all nations of the UK – Approved Document E in England and Wales, Section 5 in Scotland and Northern Ireland’s Part G.
Each system utilises a carefully selected combination of Hush Acoustics’ insulation products including its rubber-based materials. These work together to effectively address the problem of impact noise on concrete and masonry floors, as well as providing additional airborne sound reduction. Being a UK manufacturer of acoustic products, Hush is ideally placed to understand the performance characteristics and compatibility of individual materials and apply these in the correct ways to minimise sound transmission paths, including troublesome flanking noise.
Amongst the high quality products used within its acoustic systems are its under and over screed acoustic membranes and Hush-Mat 15. This 15mm mat is made from a uniquely engineered acoustic rubber offering high levels of mass to contribute to airborne sound reduction as well as impact sound - not normally the case with acoustic flooring products of this kind.
From the HD1018 overlay system, which is suitable for treating a concrete slab in-situ, to the HD1042 under screed system, all the Hush systems are designed to be economical and suitable for refurbishment, conversion and new build projects.
Hush provides full technical and installation guidance, along with specialist support to develop bespoke solutions or address more complex issues with concrete, masonry or timber floor constructions. Please contact us for technical support: https://www.hushacoustics.co.uk/contact/
